Labels

I always put a label on my quilts.  I hand-stitch it to the lower right hand corner of the back.  The labels are inspired by old-fashioned hang tags and include:
  • Quilt-maker’s signature
  • Title
  • Quilt size
  • Year of completion
  • Number of pieces
  • Place where it was made
  • Quilting information (*)
  • Website
Prior to constructing the label, I adhere freezer paper to the back of the fabric, which makes it much easier to do the writing (with Sharpies – one thick, one thin).

Someday, the label may be the most important part of a quilt.  Imagine pulling a quilt out of a trunk in your late uncle’s attic and finding a label which would give you at least some of the quilt’s provenance.  No matter what the quilt looks like or it’s condition, the label would be the most intriguing and exciting find!

*I am unable to directly credit my Amish hand-quilters in accordance with their cultural tradition.

I, too, think quilt labels are very important. I enjoy making them and am often asked by quilting friends to make their labels. I hope you don't mind that I pinned your label, linking it back to your post, for others to enjoy! Thanks! ~karen

I do label most of my quilts, but never thought to put all of that info on it. Love your label – thanks for sharing it with us~!

I make them. I don't sell or pattern them though.

I love the idea of including the number of pieces! Silly question- do you just count pieces in the top? What if you use a pieced back? Count binding pieces? Thanks!

Just pieces in the top as best I can. I don't get too crazy about it 😉

I also think labels with information about the quilt are very important. I have a few that need labels and i love your idea!

Just now finding your blog via a link from the Aurifil blog. I like your label design and it has given me the motivation to finally design my own. I have been thinking about my design but wasn't sure how to actually make it. Your hang tag and sharpie pens have pulled my thoughts together. Do you use the same fabric for all of your labels or select a print from your quilt top?

I typically use a tea-dyed muslin that I purchase at one of my local quilt/fabric shops. It was that nice old-fashioned look and goes with most everything. Sorry for my very slow response. I don't have a reliable way of knowing I have comments or questions to respond to on my site. Happy sewing! E

I've heard worrying things about using Sharpies for this. What is your experience? Is that just a rumour started by the Sharpie people?

SO far so good. I've been using them on labels for years. What concerns have you heard?
